This mold-maker built his business from the ground up. In 1945, George D. Utley II was busy in the basement of his mother's house in Queens, New York, working to create prototypes of bottles made from then-revolutionary new plastics. Today, Utley's Incorporated is a bustling model manufacturer with a staff of 50 and a client roster that includes several major cosmetics companies. Transforming two-dimensional ideas into three-dimensional plastic products takes innovation and foresight, and when their aging computer system could no longer support company growth, Utley's turned to IBM. They chose a Netfinity® 5000 server as the foundation of their new system, with Lotus Notes® and Lotus SmartSuite® as their central applications. Buying a complete technology solution from IBM gave Utley's confidence that all of the system components would work together smoothly and provide the reliability they needed.
